The Rajang River is the longest river in Malaysia and one of the most socio-economically important peat-draining rivers in Southeast Asia. This research looked at spatial and seasonal variations of microbial communities (Bacteria, Phytoplankton and Picoplankton) and nutrient dynamics and budgets (focus on dissolved phosphorus). It is the first large-scale study covering almost 300 km of the Rajang River-South China Sea continuum. Insights gained from this research highlight the impacts of rainfall (seasonality) and human influence which serve as a platform for future research in order to preserve and provide sustainable solutions for future generations that are dependent on this region.
