As the world’s population grows, so too will the amount of waste it produces. This will occur mostly in the form of municipal solid waste, of which low and high density polyethylene will make up a large portion. Solar thermal pyrolysis offers a sustainable way of breaking down this polyethylene waste into commercially valuable upgraded waste fuel. Periods of low solar exposure reduces the amount of waste that can be converted into fuel. This research focussed on modelling and optimising solar thermal pyrolysis to account for this solar intermittency and make it more economically viable process.
