This thesis investigates the chemical and physical properties of a family of organic semiconducting materials, the so-called naphthalene diimides (NDIs), as high-performance materials for the development of organic electronics and solar cell applications. Using a range of scientific characterisation techniques, the thermal, optical and electron mobility properties of a family of NDI derivatives were evaluated and tested for their efficiencies. The results clearly indicated this family of compounds holds promise as active materials in non-silica solar cell development as a source of clean energy to reduce our carbon footprint.
