This thesis examines several major fires in Eastern Victoria over the past twenty years. Working from archival records, the study reconstitutes FireWeb datasets to assess fire behaviour, environmental context and DELWP response. What emerges is an understanding that current containment methods have limited effectiveness in the face of the 'mega-fires' of the 21st century and it demonstrates the need for significant changes to the way that land and fire is managed in Victoria.
