This dissertation examined perceived workplace adversity and its effect on the psychological wellbeing of correctional officers. Results indicated that officers perceived a higher level of adversity than other occupations examined with the exception of police and emergency services. Officer-endorsed interpersonal, cognitive and behavioural response tendencies were identified and an empirical link between perceived adversity, psychological wellbeing and negative organisational impacts was established. Furthermore, the use of an Interpersonal/Solution-focussed (ISF) response style when faced with adversity reduced the impact of perceived adversity on psychological wellbeing. ISF strategies assist officers to maintain their wellbeing and reduce absenteeism, presenteeism and job dissatisfaction.
