Galaxy kinematics refers to the internal motions of stars. This thesis develops techniques used to analyse observations of kinematics that extend into the outskirts of galaxies, where the light is much fainter than in the inner regions. It is in these outer regions that the imprint of a galaxy's history is the greatest, so therefore a careful consideration of these regions in kinematic studies is crucial to learning about the formation and evolution of galaxies.
