This thesis explores the variation in the ways environmental health professionals experience their practice. The study involved semi-structured interviews with nineteen practising environmental health professionals in an Australian context. A key outcome of this research is the establishment of a new conceptualisation of the professional practice of environmental health, which has several societal benefits. Importantly, the new conceptualisation has the potential to act as a framework that can improve practice, education for professional practice and assist environmental health practitioners to effectively deal with the complexities and uncertainties associated with human interaction with the environment, both now and in the future.
