This project explored the benefits of reframing parent-child interactions according to procedural justice theory—what we term ‘respect-based parenting’. The parenting literature and procedural justice theory have much in common, but have historically remained siloed. Our research highlighted these similarities as well as points of divergence, and identified respect-based parenting could integrate the two literatures. Empirical data demonstrated respect-based parenting was a theoretically sensible construct, and that those who experienced higher respect-based parenting also had better psychosocial outcomes. We argue respect-based parenting offers a novel theoretical contribution to both the parenting and procedural justice literatures, regardless of the empirical findings that emerge.
