One approach to address nurse shortages is increasing the number of enrolled nurses . However, there is a gap between what enrolled nurses learn in their courses and the skills they need on the job, especially in mental health. Nursing students need to be trained in communication, critical thinking, and clinical reasoning. This thesis suggests that simulation-based education with simulated participants can help close this gap and prepare enrolled nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attributes needed to work effectively with consumers experiencing mental health issues.
