The present project developed and investigated two complex models between constructs that have attracted significant attention in the bipolar disorder (BD) literature but not previously been tested together. Constructs were proneness to depression or hypo/mania, personality, motivation, sleep (conceptualised as both trait-like and state), coping and outcome (mood and wellbeing). Primary findings were threefold: firstly, trait-like sleep can be employed as predictor of vulnerability to BD (alongside personality and motivation); secondly, state sleep partially mediated the interaction between vulnerability to BD and outcome; and thirdly, mood/wellbeing outcomes can be improved by focussing on coping styles, irrespective of vulnerability to BD.
