State observation always plays an important role in control engineering, and this thesis mainly focuses on the development of sliding mode observer design for a class of non-linear systems with applications to permanent magnet synchronous motor systems. Based on the proposed design approach, the sliding mode observer can be designed for many industrial systems and implemented in areas such as parameter identification, fault detection and sensor-less control. It is believed that the theoretical foundation of modern sliding mode observer systems will be built up in accordance with our research and extensive further work can be done along this direction.
