Dr King researched the social processes of networks for industrial symbiosis - the idea that one company's trash is another's treasure. The research on the Australian case of ASPIRE showed that while a digital matchmaking marketplace is successful in suggesting potential waste matches, organisational factors drive these social processes of inter-organisational collaboration. This research showed the important role of recycler communication across the network and that public sector matchmaking improves collaboration. ASPIRE is a new model of industrial symbiosis and exemplifies the coordination between private and public sector to reduce waste and transition to a circular economy.
