Deep excavation projects are commonly found in urban areas due to space constraint. One of the main concerns of any deep excavation project is soil movement arising from the soil-structure interaction. With the advancement of computing technology, numerical back-analyses in two- and three-dimensional models are very common. As excavation are always a three-dimensional problem, this thesis investigates the effect of capping beam and how it influences the corner effect in an excavation that experienced groundwater lowering. Understanding how these factors cause ground movement improves the accuracy of basement design and construction in similar ground conditions.
