The main objective of this research was to develop novel and reliable statistical models for monitoring bird populations and detecting risk factors for their survival using citizen science data. This thesis focuses on the ecology and conservation of resident shorebirds, a group comprising many threatened and declining species dependent on coasts and wetlands. The effects of climate, conservation areas, pest control and ecoregion migration are considered. Effective biodiversity protection requires timely and accurate information of population trends, so the findings of this research will help to create more effective and efficient future responses for saving threatened bird species worldwide.
