This research examines economic development in a rural region, specifically how and why local people are supported to start new businesses in the region. I shine a light on the people providing support to entrepreneurs, and concentrate on how these supporters manoeuvre around social, political, environmental and economic tensions to create new economic options locally. This research shows how powerful people elsewhere shape economic outcomes in rural regions, and the strategies used by rural regions to carve out space for their own ideas and values. This research opens up new directions for designing just and sustainable development.
