This thesis addresses the decolourisation of coloured compounds by an Australian isolate of Pycnoporus cinnabarinus. The study investigated the involvement of the extracellular fungal enzyme, laccase, in colour removal from liquid solutions. This thesis identified the lignin degrading fungus, P. cinnabarinus, as a potentially useful organism to decolourise wastewaters containing complex aromatic compounds. The principle extracellular enzyme, laccase, was shown to be involved in the destruction of chromophoric material.
