This research proposes the Function Integrity Diagnosis and Documentation (FIDD) method to support concept assessment in engineering design. It focuses on conceptual design to assess alternative design concepts for their suitability in design adaptation. The FIDD method employs system modelling with risk assessment to analyse risk to function fulfillment. The resulting Function Integrity indicator supports function reasoning of a prospective concept to compare dissimilar designs. Three empirical case studies showed that applying this method enables designers to leverage their experience in integrating novel systems into existing products and services.
