Many advanced and developing countries are experiencing a super-aged society. Aging is associated with a decline in cognitive ability, which can lead to decrease an independent, high functioning life, and create a significant economic burden on society. It has been hypothesized that inflammation is related to cognition. Inflammation is a highly complex and dynamic process of the immune system that restores and preserves tissue homeostasis. The results of the current thesis research indicates that low-grade systemic inflammation is associated with poorer cognitive function in a highly controlled healthy population. Our results may lead to new interventions that reduce inflammation and improve cognitive function in the elderly.
