This PhD work was a collaborative project between Swinburne University, BlueScope Steel and CAST CRC. The main aim of the project work was to investigate the possibility of refining thin aluminum-zinc-silicon coatings by a method called rapid thermal processing. The results showed that ultra-refined coatings can be obtained by processing using high power lasers. It is expected that these refined coatings will improve corrosion resistance of coated steel sheets. The results obtained from this project can be used as a guide for thermal modification of thin coatings on thin steel substrates.
