This project aims to develop a low-carbon geothermal pavement technology, which will extract an untapped source of renewable energy from the heat absorbed and radiated by roads. By incorporating demolition material in the geothermal pavement structure, the landfill stockpiles will reduce, which has environmental and economic benefits. On the other hand, Australia seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, which shows the necessity of developing a new source of renewable energy. Geothermal pavements have the potential to add a new source to Australia’s renewable energy mix and significantly reduce energy consumption in the urban and regional environment.
