This thesis includes three studies that drew on data collected for the Journey to Social Inclusion Phase 2 randomised controlled trial, which compared a novel homelessness intervention developed by Sacred Heart Mission with standard care. The research generates new knowledge on the traumatic experiences and mental health needs of adults with a history of chronic homelessness in Melbourne. The findings have implications for homelessness services, mental health services, and public policy. Future research is needed to develop treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders that are effective for people experiencing homelessness and for those who obtain housing.
