This research explores how people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and bipolar disorder may vary in their cognitive abilities, and how cognitive variability relates to physical characteristics of the brain. The findings suggest that cognitive ability is indeed variable and not specific to diagnosis, and whilst we do have an understanding of how cognition maps to variation in underlying brain morphology, more research is needed to determine why inconsistencies are present. It is hoped that this body of work will guide future research endeavours aimed at better understanding of cognition in these disorders.
