As the population ages, addressing the needs of older adults will need creative and evidence-based treatments to meet growing need. This thesis explored the theory, practices, and feasibility of using reminiscence therapy with music. Reminiscence therapy with and without music were widely used, successful, and well-tolerated interventions with older people experiencing psychological distress in Australia. Further, music-assisted reminiscence therapy provided benefits beyond that of verbal reminiscence therapy. These interventions can recognise the whole person, their rich history and strengths in the context of meaningful social connection, and therefore supports the wellbeing of older people as they navigate mental health challenges.
