This thesis is the first comprehensive study of early voting at Australian elections, the fastest growing trend in Australian electoral participation. With more than a third of Australian electors voting before Election Day at the 2016 federal election – and the continued growth of convenience voting in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada – this thesis makes an important contribution to Australian electoral administration. It also contributes to the Australian and international electoral studies literature by offering rare theoretical and empirical insights into early voting behaviour from a country with compulsory voting.
